Saginaw County is privatizing its medical examiner services. The county Board of Commissioners has approved a 10-year contract with the Michigan Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine, which will take over duties of the Saginaw County Medical Examiner’s Office. County officials said the move will save $50,000.

MIFSM plans to locate its facility in a long-vacant building at 614 Johnson in downtown Saginaw, which once housed Michigan Works! The building will undergo extensive renovation with plans to open in approximately two years. Its operation is currently based in Saginaw Township.

Besides the medical examiner work for Saginaw County, MIFSM plans to start a training program for medical investigators and create a fellowship for forensic pathologist and medical examiner training.

MIFSM already contracts with Tuscola County for medical examiner services.
