India-Based Company Eyes Flint’s Former Buick City Site

Mahindra, an Indian conglomerate with a manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, MI, is looking at a the former Buick City site in Flint for a new auto plant that could create up to 2,000 jobs. General Motors once built cars at Buick City,  closing it in 1999. Some parts of the site have already been redeveloped.

In a statement Thursday,  Mahindra Automotive North America said it has signed a letter of intent with the Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response Trust to evaluate the former Buick City site. The company said it is also in talks with other states about possible sites.

Mahindra said if it gets a contract for vehicles from the U.S. Postal Service, it could build mail trucks at the site, but it could be a production site for other vehicles as well.

The company said its manufacturing facility in the Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills is at capacity.
