Wake Up Song of the Day: Derek and the Dominos “Layla“. It’s a “One Hit Wonder Monday” song! For our purposes, defined as a singer or group known for only one song to chart on the U.S. Billboard Top 40. Or, even if a second song is on the chart, it is overwhelmed and generally forgotten because of the success of the “One Hit Wonder”. The band, formed by legendary music man, Eric Clapton, was only active for one year and one album. “Layla” was originally released in 1971 and did nothing. It was re-released in 1972 and hit #10 on the charts. The son was co-written by Clapton, inspired by his secret love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend, George Harrison. After Harrison and Boyd divorced, he eventually married Boyd. In 1992, Clapton recorded and unplugged version which some say was better than the original! Click for “Layla” unplugged. This version won a Grammy.
