Wake Up Song of the Day: Elton John “Bennie and the Jets”. It’s the Friday Flashback Song! We “Flash Back” in 10-20-30-40-50-60-70 year increments to find Number One Songs at this time that are still remembered today, along with the artists and groups that perform. Or, Number One Songs that are long forgotten, along with the artists and groups that perform. In 1974, Elton hit #1 for 1 week with this famous “live” version of his song. It was actually recorded in a studio with live sound effects added in later, according to producer Gus Dudgeon. He mixed in sounds from a 1972 performance of John in Royal Festival Hall and a 1970 Jimi Hendrix concert at the Isle of Wight. Plus included a series of whistles from a live concert in Vancouver, and added hand claps and various shouts. Elton was set against releasing it as a single thinking it would fail, but legendary music station CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, began heavy airplay of the song and it became #1 in Detroit and caught on from there. The song is spelled “Bennie” in the USA and Canada. In most other places, the spelling is “Benny”.
