After being closed for several weeks, Bay City’s Liberty Bridge re-opened around 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 26 to regular vehicular traffic after needed repairs.

The draw bridge had been closed since June 28 due to issues with a gear box, which Bay City Director of Public Works Robert Dion said could have lead to catastrophic damage if it had been run any longer.

Residents expressed frustration after the closure kept the bridge raised through the July 4 Fireworks, Rockin’ the River races and concerts and Tall Ships Celebration, but Dion said it was a matter of public safety.
