The U.S. Soccer Region 2 Midwest Championships got off  to an excellent start at the Saginaw Township Soccer Complex on Friday. Hundreds of teams from about 15 states, with players ranging in age from 13 to 19 are competing as relatives, coaches and friends look on.

Organizers said fields were in good shape despite recent heavy rains. Visitors are able to find parking, which requires the purchase of a $5  pass. There’s no charge to see the games themselves.

Games will continue into next week with 14 teams crowned champions Wednesday before heading off to the national championships next month in Kansas.
