Dog Rescued After Falling through Ice on Tittabawassee River

An Irish Setter in Midland had quite an ordeal Monday after falling through the ice on the Tittabawassee River.

First responders were called to Emerson Park after a report of the dog struggling in the water. Officials say six-year-old Koufax was chasing deer at the time. Responders first tried retrieving Koufax with a rope, which was unsuccessful. Rescue swimmers were able to reach the dog just as he went under the water and brought him back to shore.

Koufax was ice cold and unresponsive, according to officials. He was taken to M-20 Animal Hospital where he became responsive after about two hours. Officials say Koufax is now at home resting comfortably.
