WSGW OnLine Poll: Michigan’s Bottle Bill

(November 20 – 27)

Democratic State Representative Sean McCann has introduced bills for voters to decide to expand the Michigan’s bottle deposit law. If the bills pass the Legislature and are signed by the governor, the question would appear on the November 2026 ballot.

Deposits would expand to include all beverage containers one gallon or less, such as water bottles. There would be exemptions for items such as milk and infant formulas.

Also, returns could be made at any store.

The Michigan Retailers Association opposes the bills because grocery stores, said the proposal would raise grocery prices, due to “razor-thin” grocery store margins.

The Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association supports the bill for its protection of the environment.

Democrats hope to pass the bill during the lame duck session before Republicans take control of the state House next year. Of course, Republicans do control the Senate.
