(August 7 – 14)

As investigations and discussions continue following the recent back-to-back mass shootings, politicians are debating solutions to try and prevent future attacks. There seems to be one area of common ground surfacing.

President Trump has stated he wants more “Red Flag” laws. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal say they want to create a federal grant program to help states adopt “Red Flag” laws on their own. So far, 17 states have enacted “Red Flag”.
Michigan does not have “Red Flag” laws, but attempts have been made to introduce legislation.

Though there are some variations, “Red Flag” laws generally allow law enforcement, family members, and other concerned people to petition a judge to confiscate guns from individual who may cause harm to themselves and others.

Some concerns raised about “Red Flag” laws include an individual’s right to due process.
