WSGW OnLine Poll: Free Meals in Michigan Schools

(August 28 – September 4)

For the second straight year, Michigan School Meals is providing free breakfast and lunch for all 1.4 million students in public schools through a $200 million appropriation in the School Aid Budget. This does not include any students attending nonpublic schools.

To include all students, it would cost an estimated $1.6 million from the General Fund as the state is restricted from using School Aid Fund dollars on nonpublic schools.

During the pandemic, federal funding provided free meals for all students, both public and private. The funding ended in 2022.
