Wake Up Song of the Day:     The 5th Dimension “One Less Bell to Answer”. It’s a “Songs that Peaked at #2 Monday”!   Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did.   Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!

The 5th Dimension produced 20 top 40 hits in the 1960s and 1970s. Three were #1, and one was #2. For two weeks, the last week of 1969 and the first week of 1970, “One Less Bell to Answer” was #2 behind the George Harrison #1 “My Sweet Lord”.

It was #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart It went platinum.

Legendary songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote the song, but disagree on the inspiration.

Burt Bacharach tells the story of an incident with his then girlfriend, actress Angie Dickinson. They were living together in London apparently with some tension. When the doorbell rang one day, Burt says Angie commented “one less bell to answer, when I get out of here”. Hal was there, heard it, and wrote it down as a good song title.

Hal David says he and Burt were in London working on a project. I was invited to a dinner party. The hostess said, when you arrive, don’t ring the bell, just come in. It’ll make one less bell for me to answer. I was wise enough to know it was a good title!
