Wake Up Song of the Day: Roy Orbison “Oh, Pretty Woman”. It’s the Friday Flashback Song! We “Flash Back” in 10-20-30-40-50-60-70 year increments to find Number One Songs at this time that are still remembered today, along with the artists and groups that perform. Or, Number One Songs that are long forgotten, along with the artists and groups that perform.
It was 60 years ago in 1964, Roy was #1 for 3 weeks with this song he co-wrote with Bill Dees. The title of the song was inspired by Orbison’s wife, Claudette. She interrupted a conversation between Roy and Bill to announce she was going out. Roy asked if she had enough cash, and that’s when Bill interjected, “A pretty woman never needs any money.”
The song was famously involved in a U.S. Supreme Court case regarding fair use. In 1989, the group 2 Live Crew recorded a parody. Orbison’s music publisher sued on the basis fair use did not permit reuse of copyrighted material. The court ruled unanimously in 2 Live Crew’s favor which expanding fair sue and extended protections to parodies.
“Oh, Pretty Woman” was used for the title of the 1990 film Pretty Woman and its 2018 Broadway musical adaptation.
In 1999, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In 2008, the Library of Congress selected the song for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
