Wake Up Song of the Day:     “Bohemian Rhapsody”.   It’s a “Songs that Peaked at #2 Monday”!   Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did.   Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!

The first time “Bohemian Rhapsody” charted when the song was released was #9 in 1976.   It was #1 for 9 weeks in the U.K., plus numerous other countries.   It hit #1 in the U.K. again following the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991.

But, in 1992, thanks to the popularity of the movie, “Wayne’s World”, and the use of the song in the famous headbanging car scene, the song recharted and Peaked at #2 for 1 week.

In fact, a new video of the song was released, interspersing excerpts from the film with footage from the original Queen video, along with some live footage of the band.   “Wayne’s World” star, Mike Myers, was horrified, fearing that this would upset Queen.   Waybe was quoted as saying, “they’ve just whizzed on a Picasso.”   He apologized to Queen and told the band the video was not his idea.   The band sent a reply simply saying, “Thank you for using our song.”   This astonished Myers, who responded, “Thank you for even letting me touch the hem of your garments!”

The movie makers originally wanted to use a Guns N’ Roses song for the head banging scene, but Myers demanded “Bohemian Rhapsody”, even threatening to quit the production unless it was used. There are reports suggesting Freddie Mercury saw the head banging scene before his death, found it hilarious and approved the song for the film’s use.   However, due to the short time frame between the completion of the film and Mercury’s death, it’s believed it was unlikely anyone would have had access to a tape of the scene to show Freddie.

The Wayne’s World video version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” won Queen its only MTV Video Music Award for “Best Video from a Film”.

What song kept “Bohemian Rhapsody” out of the top spot? Kris Kross and “Jump”.

In 2004, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
