Wake Up Song of the Day: Mary Hopkin “Those Were The Days”. It’s a “Songs that Peaked at #2 Monday”! Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did. Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!
Mary was a Welsh singer that covered “Those Were The Days” as her debut single in 1968. It Peaked at #2 for three weeks in the states. It was #1 on the Easy Listening Chart. The song topped charts in several other countries.
It was produced by Paul McCartney. Paul had heard “Those Were The Days” in a club he frequented and attempted unsuccessfully to get several singers and groups to record it, including the early Moody Blues. After the formation of the Beatles’ own Apple Records label, McCartney recorded Mary Hopkin performing the song at Abbey Road Studios in London.
Paul also recorded Mary singing versions in Spanish, German, Italian, and French. Other artists worldwide covered the song in over twenty languages.
The song that kept “Those Were The Days” at #2 for three weeks? The Beatles “Hey Jude”.
