Wake Up Song of the Day: Wang Chung “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”. It’s a “Songs that Peaked at #2 Monday”! Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did. Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!
It was 1986 and this English new wave band which had five Top 40 songs, peaked at #2 for two weeks with their biggest song, “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”. It did hit #1 in Canada. The song was noteworthy for containing the name of the band as a line in the lyrics.
The name Wang Chung (spelled by the group Wang Chung) is the first note in the Chinese classical music scale. It means “yellow bell” in English. A founding member of the the group came across the term in a book and decided it would make a great name for the band. However, first using the original spelling, Huang Chung, made it difficult for English-speakers to pronounce the name. At some point, a suggestion was made to change the spelling to make it easier to say the name.
Wang Chung performed as opening acts for Tina Turner and The Cars. They did a combined tour of the U.S. with The Romantics and Berlin.
The song that kept “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” from the top spot for two weeks, the last week of December 1986 and the first week of January 1987 was The Bangles “Walk Like an Egytian”.
By the way, the video for “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” included very rapid editing between different takes with shots flipping through up to four takes, some approaching up to 1/25th of a second between edits. The video was banned by the BBC from airing after a medical expert claimed it could trigger “epileptic fits”.
