Wake Up Song of the Day:     Madonna “Cherish”.   It’s a “Songs that Peaked at #2 Monday”!   Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did.   Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!

While Madonna topped the chart 12 times, she also released 6 songs that Peaked at #2, including in 1989, “Cherish”, which was #2 for 2 weeks.   It did hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It was #1 in Canada and a Top Ten song in numerous countries.

Madonna co-wrote and co-produced this song which was built around the themes of love and relationships, with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet being one of the major inspirations. The song did include a line from “Cherish” by the 1960s band the Association, “Cherish is the word I use”.

The song that stopped Madonna from #1 was Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much”.

By the way, while not hitting #1, “Cherish” still established a record for Madonna releasing the most consecutive top-five singles by any act with 16.
