Wake Up Song of the Day: Billy Swan “I Can Help”. It’s the Friday Flashback Song! We “Flash Back” in 10-20-30-40-50-60-70 year increments to find Number One Songs at this time that are still remembered today, along with the artists and groups that perform. Or, Number One Songs that are long forgotten, along with the artists and groups that perform.
Billy Swan “I Can Help” is also a one-hit wonder. In 1974, Billy was #1 for two weeks. In fact, it was a crossover hit reaching #1 on the Country Chart, too.
The composition of the song actually began in a music room his wife converted from a closet inside a small duplex. Billy revealed he used a “rock” preset from a drum machine for rhythm, played chords along with it, wrote three verses first, and then came up with a bridge. He said the whole thing just came out of the air in about 20 minutes.
When the song was recorded, the distinctive keyboards were played by Billy on a portable organ. The producer and engineer, Chip Young, had a German Shepherd puppy at the studio. As Billy played the organ, the puppy named Bowser, kept tugging on his pant leg. Several different types of microphones were used, including lapel mics to record the acoustic guitars.
