Wake Up Song of the Day: Tommy James and the Shondells “Crystal Blue Persuasian”. It’s a “Songs that Peaked at #2 Monday”! Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did. Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!
“Crystal Blue Persuasion” was the last Top Ten song for Tommy James and the Shondells, peaking at #2 for three weeks in 1969.
Tommy explained the title of the song came to him while he was reading the Bible and the Book of Revelation: “Reading about the New Jerusalem. The words jumped out at me, and they’re not together; they’re spread out over three or four verses. But it seemed to go together, it’s my favorite of all my songs and one of our most requested.”
Tommy’s manager says Tommy was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel, the Book of Isaiah, and Book of Revelation.
There were suggestions by others who suggested, since at the time of the song’s release there were several popular types of high quality blue-colored LSD tablets in circulation, Tommy’s song was referring to “acid”.
The song that kept “Crystal Blue Persuasion” from the top spot for three weeks was “In the Year 2525” by Zager and Evans. It did hit #1 in Canada.
