It’s the WSGW Friday Morning Team with YOU and Charlie and Mike and Jonathan –  presented  by Paint Bull in Saginaw…..

Today is National Doughnut or Donut Day

WSGW Remembers What This Day is All About in the First Place

The First Friday in June is when National Doughnut Day is recognized.   The day was created by the The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War and serve as a fundraiser to help those in need during the Great Depression.   Soon after the entrance of the United States into World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France.   The mission concluded that the needs of American enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed “huts” that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service.   Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could “mother” the boys.   These huts were established by the Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers.   About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France.   Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers came up with the idea of providing doughnuts.   These are reported to have been an “instant hit”, and “soon many soldiers were visiting the Salvation Army huts”.   Soon, the women who did this work became known by the servicemen as “Doughnut Girls”.   In the Second World War, Red Cross Volunteers also distributed doughnuts, and it became routine to refer to the Red Cross girls as Doughnut Dollies as well.   In Chicago and other cities, National Donut Day is still a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

Wake Up Song of the Day:     Paul McCartney and Wings “Band on the Run”. It’s the Friday Flashback Song! We “Flash Back” in 10-20-30-40-50-60-70 year increments to find Number One Songs at this time that are still remembered today, along with the artists and groups that perform. Or, Number One Songs that are long forgotten, along with the artists and groups that perform. In 1974, Paul and Wings hit #1 for 1 week. “Band on the Run” is a medley of three musical passages that vary in style. The original demo recording for “Band on the Run” (and other songs from the album) were stolen while Paul McCartney and Wings were recording in Lagos, Nigeria. Robbed at knifepoint, they relinquished the demos, only recovering the songs through memory. “Band on the Run” won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.
