Wake Up Song of the Day:     Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs “Wooly Bully”.   Every Monday, we play a song that you may think hit #1, but never did.   Or, perhaps you thought this song never did as well to reach #2!   In 1965, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs peaked at #2 for two weeks behind The Beach Boys “Help Me, Rhonda” and The Supremes “Back In My Arms Again”.   “Wooly Bully” stayed in the Hot 100 for 18 weeks, the longest time for any song in 1965, and became the first song ever named Billboard’s #1 Song of the Year despite never reaching #1 (that’s now happened 3 other times). The lyrics of “Wooly Bully” were hard to understand, and some radio stations banned the song.   It was nominated for a Grammy Award.   In 2009, the original 1965 release of the song on the MGM label by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.   You might think “Wooly Bully” was a one hit wonder for Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, but one year later, they had another song that peaked at #2, “Li’l Red Riding Hood”.
