Wake Up Song of the Day:     John Denver “Annie’s Song”.   It’s the Friday Flashback Song!   We “Flash Back” in 10-20-30-40-50-60-70 year increments to find Number One Songs at this time that are still remembered today, along with the artists and groups that perform.   Or, Number One Songs that are long forgotten, along with the artists and groups that perform.   It was 1974 when John topped the charts for 2 weeks.   “Annie’s Song” was written for John’s wife at the time, Annie Martell Denver.   He wrote the song in July 1973 in about ten-and-a-half minutes one day on a ski lift to the top of Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado.   The physical exhilaration of having skied down a very difficult run and the feeling of total immersion in the beauty of the colors and sounds that filled all senses inspired him to think about his wife.   Annie Denver said it was written the two had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good.   Annie said it was initially a love song and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer.   John and Annie were married from 1967-1982.   “Annie’s Song” was also #1 in the United Kingdom, where it was his only major hit single.   James Galway also recorded an instrumental version with his flute and it was a hit in Britain, too.
