Bay City Resident Sues United Bridge Partners Over Toll Dispute and Alleged Retaliation
A Bay City resident, Robert Markillie, has filed a lawsuit against United Bridge Partners (UBP) in Bay County Circuit Court over alleged improper toll charges while crossing Liberty Bridge. According to attorney Matthew B. Hewitt, Markillie received a transponder for his van, unaware of an additional charge for vehicles over 7 feet tall. After being measured at 7 feet 3 inches, Markillie was charged $2 for each crossing for over six months without notification. His total bill reached $754 for 377 crossings, which he believed should have been $0.
When he contacted UBP for clarification, a representative allegedly dismissed his concerns, stating the rates were clearly posted and suggested he should feel grateful for the charges. After challenging the fees, UBP recharged Markillie $2,833, claiming he had crossed the bridge 378 times at a higher toll rate. The lawsuit, which includes claims of breach of contract, fraud, negligence, and retaliation, seeks a judgment of $2,833, plus $268 in additional charges and legal fees. Hewitt emphasizes the need for trust between residents and UBP in the wake of this dispute.
