The Michigan State Police (MSP) West Branch post responded to an address on Dutcher Road for a complaint of animal cruelty Wednesday. Troopers discovered numerous animals including dogs, goats, cows, and horses that needed immediate attention due to malnutrition, neglect and/or lack of proper care.  Troopers located over 60 dogs that will receive treatment and be held at various animal shelters. Area residents are assisting with the care and housing of the livestock. Numerous carcasses were also located on the property that had not been properly buried.

State Police said the 40-year-old female property owner is being investigated for multiple charges of animal cruelty. Depending on the level of cruelty involved, animal abuse may be considered either a misdemeanor or a felony. The troopers are being assisted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, including veterinary services, Gladwin County Animal Control, Ogemaw County Animal Control, Clare County Animal Control, Roscommon County Animal Control, Arenac County Animal Control, Bay County Animal Control, Midland County Humane Society, Missaukee County Humane Society, Gladwin County Prosecutors Office and Dr. Pol from Weidman, Michigan, a celebrity veterinarian known for his popular television series, The Incredible Dr. Pol, also volunteered his time and expertise.

State Police advise that if you witness suspected cruelty to animals, call your local animal control agency as soon as possible or dial 9-1-1 if you are unfamiliar with local organizations.
