SK Siltron CSS in Bay City to Receive $544 Million Federal Loan

A Bay City manufacturing plant stands to receive a $544 million federal loan.

SK Siltron CSS has received a conditional commitment from the U.S. Department of Energy to expand American manufacturing of silicon carbide wafers. According to the DOE, the wafers are used in a variety of electric vehicle components including inverters, drivetrains, and electrical distribution systems.

The project is expected to create 200 construction jobs while the facility is built and up to 200 skilled operations jobs when production begins. Officials say this would put SK CSS among the top 5 silicon carbide wafer manufacturers in the world.

Before the loan is finalized, SK Siltron will need to satisfy certain technical, legal, environmental, and financial conditions.
