Saginaw To Get 334 Acre Riverfront Park

A former General Motors plant site and a closed landfill are getting a new lease on life thanks to a purchase from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The site of the Saginaw Malleable Iron Plant and a closed landfill will soon become a 334 acre park along the Saginaw River within the city of Saginaw. There’s also a parcel adjacent to the former Delphi Saginaw Steering Gear Plant 2. Grants totaling $590,000 dollars from the Natural Resources Trust Fund will be used to develop the park, which includes wetlands, shallow water ponds, forested river corridors, trails and areas for fishing and wildlife viewing. The park will be connected to local rail trail systems and the Iron Belle Trail, spanning the entire state from Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula to Detroit’s Belle Isle.

The new park will be operated by the Saginaw County Department of Parks and Recreation. A ground breaking ceremony is expected next spring.
