Politics Highlights Weekend Rally In Bay City
Michigan is preparing for a major change in how district boundaries for the state legislature and Congress are drawn.
In 2018, voters approved an initiative for an independent commission to draw those lines instead of political parties. Carol Heron, a former regional director of Voters, Not Politicians, encourages people attending the Saturday, September 21 We The People rally in Bay City’s Wenonah Park to consider applying for the commission.
The Citizens Redistricting Commission will consist of four citizens each from Democrat and Republican supporters and five independent voters. Several Republican groups have filed lawsuits against the commission and some state lawmakers are seeking legislation to limit Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s budget for the panel.
The Michigan Secretary of State web site, http://michigan.gov/sos , has more information about the panel.
With the first day of Fall just around the corner and temperatures in the 80’s, Bay City’s We The People organizer Diane Bruder wasn’t disappointed by a small turnout. She felt the nearly 60 people attending the rally would talk with others who in turn may talk to others about the issues.
