Natural Gas Price Increase Coming to Consumers Energy Customers

Consumers Energy is raising the price of natural gas to its customers.

The Michigan Public Service Commission recently approved the rate increase, which will amount to around 5.8percent for most Consumers customers, totaling $140 million. Consumers had orginally requested a 12.5 percent increase, or more than $278 million.

However, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel intervened in the request, saying Michigan households cannot afford a double digit rate increase when budgets are already strained from the rising price of gas, food and other items.

The rate increase will be used to provide reliable natural gas service, and to perform repairs and upgrades to the infrastructure.
