MDOT to Hold Open House on Major Road Projects in Gladwin County

Residents and community stakeholders of Gladwin County are invited to attend an open house hosted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on February 13.

MDOT representatives will be on hand to discuss upcoming project throughout the county, including building a new permanent M-30 bridge over the Tobacco River, resurfacing M-18, and culvert work along M-61, M-30, M-20, and M-18. The Gladwin County Road Commission (GCRC) will also provide information on its 2024 projects for primary and local roadways. Attendees will be able to view project information and provide input on proposed improvements.

MDOT will be highlighting the following three major projects:

M-30 bridge construction over the Tobacco River: In March, MDOT will begin an approximately $12 million investment to build a permanent three-span bridge over the Tobacco River to replace the temporary bridge installed following the Edenville dam breach in May 2020.

During construction, the bridge will be closed with detoured via Curits Road to M-18, then Dale Road back to M-30. Trucks will be detoured via US-10 to M-18, then M-61 back to M-30.

M-18 resurfacing: In May, MDOT will begin an approximately $4 million investment to mill and resurface 17.6 miles of M-18 from First Street to the Gladwin and Roscommon County line. This project will also include sidewalk ramps, shoulder gravel, pavement markings, and slope restoration work. Traffic will be maintained using traffic regulators.

Culvert work: In April, MDOT will begin an approximately $6 million investment to improve 76 miles of culverts in Gladwin County. This project includes culver replacements, lining, riprap, slope stabilization, ditch cleanout, culvert cleanout, scour countermeasures, guardrail installation, and pavement marking work.

Work will be done in areas along M-61 from Bard Road to west of the Gladwin/Bay county line, M-30 from west of Stillwagon Road to north of Twin Lake Road, M-20 from west of 11 Mile Road to west of 9 Mile Road, and M-18 from Coolidge Road to east of Shearer Road.

Traffic will be maintained using traffic regulators and lane shifts, depending on location.

The open house will take place at the Gladwin County Road Commission building at 301 S. State St. in Gladwin from 4:00-5:30 p.m.
