Man Sentenced In Gratiot County for Shooting at Police in 2021

Sentencing for a man convicted of shooting at police in Alma a few years ago took place Monday in Gratiot County.

A judge sentenced 31-year-old Tyler Moreno to a minimum of 30 years in prison on convictions of several felonies, including attempted murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and numerous firearms violations. According to court documents, on October 18, 2021, Moreno was supposed to appear in court for assault. However, he went to the Alma Police Department and opened fire on the building. He continued to shoot at police as they chased him west on Superior Street. Police returned fire, wounding Moreno, and he was arrested near the campus of Alma College.

While a jury rejected a defense of legal insanity, they did find him guilty but mentally ill.
