Man Killed After Breaking Into Home In Oakland County
A woman and her stepson are alive after a harrowing incident involving a break in at the man’s home in Oakland County.
Police say the 62-year-old woman was staying with her stepson and his wife in the 2100 block of Elkhorn Road in Orion Township after her long term relationship with 67-year-old Galen Gavitt ended. The woman had a personal protection order against Gavitt, as well as an extreme risk protection order out of Tuscola County. Police say on Wednesday around 10:00 A.M., Gavitt, of Unionville, broke into a back window of the home with an axe. He was armed with a .38 caliber revolver, according to police. The woman and the younger man barricaded themselves in an upstairs bedroom, with the stepson trying to prevent Gavitt from entering. However, police say the man shot through the door, causing the stepson to fall. When Gavitt enered the room, the younger man, who was also armed with a handgun, shot Gavitt in the head, who died at the scene.
The woman and her stepson were unharmed. The incident remains under investigation.
