Man Convicted of Murder In 1984 At Age 17 Resentenced In Midland County

A man convicted of first degree murder in 1984 has been resentenced in Midland County.

Originally sentenced to life without parole for the 1983 sexual assault and killing of a 32-year-old woman with three children, Brian Granger of Breckenridge was resentenced due to his age at the time of the crime. He was 17. Michigan courts now require Miller hearings for anyone convicted of first-degree murder for acts they committed before their 19th birthday.

Granger’s conviction and sentence were upheld during numerous appeals and attempts to commute his sentence over the years. In August of 2022, the Michigan Court of Appeals reversed a trial court’s decision upholding the orginial sentence. Last Thursday, Midland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Beale imposed a sentence of 40-60 years, with credit for more than 41 years served.
