Longtime Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell has announced his plans to retire at the beginning of next year. Pickell began his law enforcement career in the Flint Police Department, and was appointed sheriff in 1999, after the retirement of former Sheriff Joe Wilson. He has been elected to five four-year terms since then.

Pickell’s last day as Sheriff will be January 5. A committee will appoint a new sheriff to fill the rest of Pickell’s term. The November 2020 election will decide on a long-term Genesee County Sheriff.
