Federal Investment Boosts Manufacturing Jobs in Mid-Michigan

A new federal investment is set to bring hundreds of jobs to mid-Michigan, with Saginaw County receiving the largest CHIP and Science Act funding in the state. Hemlock Semiconductor has been awarded up to $325 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce to expand its semiconductor-grade polysilicon manufacturing. The expansion project is scheduled to take place over the next few years, with production expected to begin in 2028. The initiative will create approximately 1,000 temporary construction jobs and add 180 permanent positions once completed. This facility aims to enhance HSC’s manufacturing capacity, supporting the semiconductor supply chain within Michigan.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the significance of this investment for advanced manufacturing and national security. Hemlock Semiconductor is currently the only U.S.-based manufacturer of hyper-pure polysilicon, employing around 1,350 people.
