The Michigan Public Service Commission has ordered Consumers Energy to respond to findings the company wasn’t marking underground utility lines in a timely manner.

The commission says more than 20,000 instances were reported when MISS DIG 8-1-1 was notified of plans to excavate. The commission’s Gas Operations Section Staff tracked Consumers’ responses to requests to mark natural gas and electrical lines in April and May, which resulted in the large volume of unanswered or partially answered requests.

MISS DIG 8-1-1 is a service which can be used to determine where those lines are for individuals or companies who want to dig on a property. Failure to mark the lines can result in injury and property damage.

Consumers will need to file its response to the findings by June 28. Anyone interested in participating in the case has until that time to file a request. Visit the commission’s website for more information.
