Consumers Energy Completes $460 Million Mid-Michigan Pipeline Project

Consumers Energy has completed its Mid-Michigan Pipeline project, modernizing 55 miles of natural gas infrastructure across five counties: Clinton, Shiawassee, Ingham, Livingston, and Washtenaw. The project, which replaces 20-inch pipelines dating back to the 1940s, upgrades the system to a safer and more reliable 36-inch pipeline.

This marks the completion of a series of major infrastructure projects totaling nearly $1.5 billion, aimed at modernizing the company’s natural gas system. The Mid-Michigan Pipeline is now operational in time for the winter heating season, ensuring continued service to homes and businesses in the region. David Hicks, Consumers Energy’s vice president overseeing the project, emphasized the company’s commitment to safety and reliability. The pipeline is also part of Consumers Energy’s broader Natural Gas Delivery Plan, designed to meet Michigan’s needs for decades to come. Environmental considerations were also a key focus during construction, with young turtles rescued from potential harm and wildflowers planted along the route to support pollinators.

The project follows the completion of other major pipeline projects, including the Saginaw Trail Pipeline in 2020 and the South Oakland Macomb Network in 2022. Consumers Energy says the modernized system will help ensure a dependable energy future for Michigan residents.
