CMU Under Investigation for Racial Discrimination

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is investigating Central Michigan University for discrimination following a complaint filed by a former track and field athlete.

The complaint was filed last October by Russell Dinkins after CMU eliminated its varsity men’s track and field program. Dinkins has advocated for track and field programs at other universities also.

CMU says the move would save it about $600,000 a year. However, the school is launching a men’s golf program for 2022-2023. Dinkins and others say the elimination of the program is a loss of opportunity for black students.

CMU is fully cooperating with the OCR investigation.
