Bay City’s Mayor Submits Resignation

The mayor of Bay City is stepping down.

Mayor Kathleen Newsham announced she would be resigning effective October 1. In a letter presented to the Bay City City Commission on Monday, City Manager Dana Muscott read the letter in Newsham’s absence, citing health concerns as the reasons for her departure, which she says would prevent her from performing the duties of the office.

Newsham was elected mayor of the city in 1997, then served as a city commissioner in 2003. She was elected mayor a second time in 2015 and served in that capacity since. In the interim, Bay City Commission President Jesse Docket will serve as a signatory to sign documents normally reserved for the mayor’s signature, approved by a 6-1 vote of the commission.

A new mayor will be elected November 5, with commissioners Andrea Burney and Christopher Girard in the race.
