Accidental Firearms Discharges Prompts Closure of Delta Police Academy Live Fire Training

Two accidental shootings at the Delta College Police Academy has prompted a closure of live fire training for the time being.

Officials say a cadet was using the training area last Wednesday and when he attempted to put the firearm back into its holster, the gun went off, firing a bullet into the ground. No one was injured. The very next day, a similar accident occurred, although this time, a cadet was wounded in the leg as he attempted to reholster the weapon. He was taken to a Midland hospital for treatment. State officials say these types of accidents are extremely rare, but with two similar accidents in two days, they have ordered the closure of the training grounds until an investigation is complete.

The two cadets remain in the academy but have been placed in remedial training.
