Saginaw County commissioners of the jail committee did a little sight seeing, Wednesday, touring what’s called an 11th hour proposal for a new jail. The committee and other county leaders toured the former TRW plant at 2328 East Genesee, a site suggested by Sheriff Bill Federspiel.
The current proposal is a new jail on property across the street from the current jail at 208 South Harrison. A consulting firm said the new jail would be around $39 million, plus an unknown amount to add a new juvenile detention center.
Federspiel presented costs supplied by Industrial Realty Group, the current owners of the TRW site. Using the 60 acre East Genesee location would range from $28 million for renovating a 400,000 square foot building to $47 million to build a new jail.
Some Saginaw County commissioners were concerned a delay to further study of the new option could mean higher interest rates on bonds sold to pay for the jail project. The county’s jail consultant will provide their idea of costs for the TRW proposal next week.
