Former Edson Sailor Returns To His Old Ship

A Navy veteran who served on the USS  Edson during the Vietnam  War says he’s proud of his military career spanning the years 1969 to 1975.

Bruce Biddinger explained the six year term encompassed going to electronics school and learning how to aim and shoot the destroyer’s guns as a fire control technician. He did that plenty of times during 1971 and ’73 as the Edson sailed off the Vietnamese coast.

The 68-year-old Biddinger added he occasionally returns to Bay City from his retirement home in Berrien Springs to guide tours of the Edson. He shared stories of his time on the Edson during a local financial service company’s Client Appreciation Night Wednesday before sleeping on the vessel for the first time in nearly four-and-a-half decades.
