Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel addressed the recent firing of Undersheriff Robert Karl as part of a larger discussion on the department's future.
He said the decision is one of several changes to increase efficiency and pivot to a different model.
It also includes eliminating a financial administrator position, and migrating that role to the county controller's office.
"I am left with making the best decisions I can make - not on an emotional level, but on an intellectual level," he said. "I assure you that my decisions are made, not with malice in mind, but with the best interest of the greater good of our constituency."
Community reaction to Karl's firing has been mixed.
A local couple also attended the Tuesday county Board of Commissioners meeting to express concerns, and ask officials to re-think the decision.
