Consumers Energy is warning customers about a telephone scam demanding they immediately pay energy bills using prepaid credit cards. More than 300 incidents in 40 counties have been reported since mid-2013. The highest number have been in Kent County, followed by Genesee and Lenawee Counties.
The incidents involve callers who can speak both English and Spanish, falsely claiming to represent Consumers Energy and aggressively demanding payment
within an hour. The customer is told to purchase a specific type of prepaid credit card and is given an 866 toll free number to call and pay their bill using the card.
Consumers Energy says it's working with local, state and federal authorities to break the crime ring, which appears to originate from outside the U.S. If you think you've been a victim of this scam, call your local law enforcement agency and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050.
